Falling Fast
W. R. Schaefer Jr.Near the highest peak, I faltered
and at once I began to slide
passed the sheep and the alter
Glanced at the man I was inside
Pictures of my life in rapid succession
in reverse, like I heard when you die
also, forward like a funeral procession
I'm a falling victim to the evil eye
Unmindful of the physical trauma
that I had surely sustained
My mind wasn't sounding alarms
A state of shock had nullified pain
I thought in theoretical terms
It's what I did when I felt guilty
Artistic rhetoric spreads like germs
finer than invisible dust is silty
What nags are the power plays you've made
en-route to your pinnacle of power
Now my apparent reduction of grade
has me taking an early shower
Let me recap what I've learned
in my grim return to humanity
No real contentment in my sojourn
I think this is a better place for me
When somebody gives you advice
Weigh it out quite carefully
A list of pros and cons are nice
Eventual is the moment of relatability
